Thrivent Builds

Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity may be the most recent chapter in the ongoing relationship between the two organizations, but both have been working side-by-side with volunteers and homeowners for more than a decade, creating decent, affordable housing for those hoping to enter the economic mainstream.

Since 1991, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Habitat together has built 500 homes. With Thrivent Builds, the goal is to build up to 500 homes per year in the near future with Thrivent Financial members, Lutheran congregations and other volunteers around the United States and around the world.

In 2009, Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity will contribute more than $24 million to help build 314 affordable houses in 37 states and the District of Columbia. More than 225 local Habitat affiliates will build these homes alongside members of Thrivent Financial and other community volunteers.

Thrivent Builds Homes is the first of a 4-part program. 60% of each local home’s cost will be paid by Thrivent Financial with 30% raised by the Habitat for Humanity local affiliate, and 10% ($12,500) raised by the Lutheran chapter.  The goal is for 50% of the volunteer workers over the life of the build to be Lutheran and for 25% to be Thrivent Financial members.  

 Our First build in 2006 was on Caroline Street in Bridgeport for a couple and their 3 children.

Our Second build in 2007 was on Jane Street in Bridgeport for a couple and their 2 children.

Our Third build in 2008 was a duplex on Arctic Street in partnership with Women Build 5. We sponsored one condo for a couple and their two children.

This year we are sponsoring one condo in the 12 condo development on William Street.  The homeowner is a single mother with two children.
